Before
Pre-sand with P1500 – the jump to P2000 is no more than double, so the scratches disappear.
Ultra-fine range
P1200–P5000: Removing dust nibs, runs and paint defects, usually wet. Then polish – the scratches are so fine that the polish takes them out.
After
Carry on with P3000 until the surface is as fine as the next job needs.

FAQs about P2000
What is P2000 sandpaper used for?
Before polishing: Before polishing, wet, with light pressure. Typical for Car & paint.
Is P2000 coarse or fine?
P2000 belongs to the ultra-fine range (P1200 to P5000): finish before polishing. The higher the number, the finer the grit.
Which grit comes after P2000?
After P2000 comes P2500 or – with the biggest jump allowed – P3000. Never more than double the number per step – that way the finer grit removes the scratches of the coarser one.
Should P2000 be used wet or dry?
On paint usually wet: from P800 the water cools, flushes away the swarf and makes the scratch pattern finer and more even. Use waterproof sheets or film discs for this – paper goes soft. P2000 also works dry with dust extraction, but clogs faster.
Which grit comes before P2000?
Before P2000, sand with P1500 (or finer). Jump straight to P2000 from too coarse a grit and you won't get the scratches out.
